火星にモノリスだなんて、なんの冗談だよ。
命がけで火星に降り立ってみたら、着陸船の目の前にモノリスが建っていた。
「ふざけるな！」
これはイタズラか？ それとも悪夢か？
ここは映画のセットで、カメラの向こうにキューブリック監督がいるんじゃないのか？
オレたちの行動は生配信されている。
といっても、地球に届くのに20分くらいはかかる。
この映像を見たら、NASAはもとよりTVで見ている視聴者も驚くだろう。
事前の着陸予定地点の観測では、こんなバカげた代物は存在していなかった。
つまり、こいつは忽然と現れたのだ。
モノリスは異星人の仕業なのか？
安直な発想だが、それがもっとも合理的な気がする。
人類初の火星への第一歩が、こんな茶番になるとは。
「船長、なんかコメントした方がよくないですか？」
女性クルーの真理がいった。
「なんていえばいいんだよ？ こんなシナリオは想定していなかったぞ」
「見たままでいいのでは？」
副操縦士のアランが小型カメラを向けていった。
「そうだな」
オレは咳払いした。
「ええ、我々は火星に降り立ちました。そして、これを見てください」
オレはモノリスを指さした。
「これを……、モノリスを発見しました。これはなんというか……ええと……まるで映画のような展開です。異星人の歓迎でしょうか」
自分でいっていて、B級映画のようだと思った。
その頃、地球では火星からの通信が途絶して大騒ぎになっていた。
火星の軌道を回る司令船との通信も取れなくなり、「有人火星探査は失敗」とのニュースが流れていた。
地球との通信ができなくなっているのを、火星のクルーたちが知ったのは、40分後だった。
「どうなってんだ？ 故障じゃないよな？」
「機器は正常です。なんらかの妨害かと思われます」真理がいった。
「こいつのせいか？」
オレはモノリスを見上げた。
「それしかないですね」とアラン。
「この、くそったれが！」
オレは石を拾って、モノリスに投げつけた。
すると、石はモノリスに吸い込まれるように消えた。
「な……なんだと？」
オレはもう一度、石を投げた。やはり、石はモノリスに消えた。
「入口？……なんでしょうか」と真理。
「ドローンだ。ドローンを飛ばしてみよう」
火星の薄い大気でも飛べるように、大きなプロペラを装備した火星用ドローンを、モノリスに向けて飛ばした。ドローンはモノリスに衝突するかと思ったら、なにもないかのようにモノリスの中に消えた。
反対側に突き抜けているわけではなかった。ドローンはモノリスの中に入ったのだ。
ドローンとの通信は可能だった。しかし、カメラは真っ暗でなにも映していない。
「空っぽの空間なのか？」
オレは考えを口に出した。
しばらくドローンを飛ばし続けると、突然カメラの映像が明るくなった。
映し出されたのは、青空と海。地球の風景のようにも見える。
「センサーによれば、濃い大気があります」とアラン。
「旋回しろ。陸地が見えた」
ドローンは向きを変え、植物が生い茂る陸地を映す。見慣れない植物だった。
「あれは……古代の樹木ですね。白亜紀頃の」真理はいった。
樹木の間に、動くものがあった。長い首をした……あれは恐竜だ。
「まさか！ ブラキオサウルスだわ！」真理は興奮していった。
「これは恐竜時代とつながっているというのか？」
「地球ではないかもしれないですよ」とアラン。
「いずれにしても、別世界につながっているわけだ。さて、どうしたものか」
オレたちは火星ローバーに戻り、対応を相談する。
「地球との通信は、いまだ回復しない。ミッションを続行するか、それとも……」
「モノリスに入るか？ ですね」真理が口をはさむ。
「戻ってこられる保証はないんですよ」アランは異を唱える。
「地球の指示を仰ぎたいところだが、それはできない。オレたちで決めよう。決を採る。モノリスに入ることに賛成する者は？」
全員が手を挙げた。
「よし、決まりだ。B級映画の展開だが、目の前に好奇心をそそられる扉があったら、入りたくなるものだ。行くぞ」
オレたちは火星ローバーで、モノリスに飛びこんだ。
What a joke, a monolith on Mars.
When I risked my life to land on Mars, I found a monolith standing right in front of the lander.
“Don’t be stupid!”
Is this a prank? Or is this a nightmare?
Isn’t this a movie set and director Kubrick is behind the camera?
What we’re doing is being broadcast live.
But it will take about 20 minutes to reach Earth.
NASA and the viewers watching on TV will be surprised when they see this video.
Prior observations of the planned landing site did not indicate the existence of such a ridiculous object.
In other words, this thing just appeared out of nowhere.
Could the monolith be the work of aliens?
It’s a cheap idea, but I think it’s the most reasonable.
I never thought that the first step to Mars would turn out to be such a farce.
“Captain, don’t you think you should make some kind of comment?”
The female crew member Mari said.
“What do you want me to say? I didn’t envision this scenario.”
“Why don’t we just take it as we see it?” Alan said.

Alan, the co-pilot, who was pointing a small camera at us, said.
“I guess so.”
I cleared my throat.
“Yes, we’ve landed on Mars. And look at this.”
“I pointed to the monolith, This is ……, and we found the monolith. This is kind of …… uh …… like a movie. Is it an alien welcome?”
I thought to myself, it’s like a B-movie.
At the same time, the Earth was in an uproar over the loss of communication from Mars.
Communication with the command ship orbiting Mars had been lost, and the news was that the manned mission to Mars had failed.
It wasn’t until 40 minutes later that the crew on Mars learned that communication with Earth had been lost.
“What’s going on? It’s not a malfunction, is it?”
“The equipment is fine.The equipment is fine, we think it’s some kind of interference,” Mari said.
“Is it because of this object?”
I looked up at the monolith.
“It’s the only way,” Alan said.
“You son of a bitch!”
I picked up the stone and threw it at the monolith, and it disappeared as if it had been sucked into the monolith.
“What the hell is ……?”
I threw the stone again. The stone disappeared into the monolith.
“Entrance? Is it ……?” said Mari.
“Get the drone out. Let’s try to fly a drone.”
A drone for Mars, equipped with a large propeller so that it could fly in the thin atmosphere of Mars, was flown towards the monolith. I thought the drone would crash into the monolith, but it disappeared into the monolith as if nothing had happened.
It didn’t go through to the other side. The drone had entered the monolith.
Communication with the drone was possible. However, the camera was completely dark and showed nothing.
“Is it empty space?”
I thought out loud.
I continued to fly the drone for a while, and suddenly the camera image brightened.
What appeared on the screen was a blue sky and ocean. It looked like the landscape of Earth.
“According to the sensors, there is a thick atmosphere,” Alan said.
“Turn. I see land.”
The drone turned around and showed a land full of plants. The plants were unfamiliar.
“That’s a …… ancient tree. Around the Cretaceous period,” Mari said.
There was something moving among the trees. It was a long-necked …… dinosaur.
“No way! It’s a Brachiosaurus!” Mari said excitedly.
“Is this connected to the age of the dinosaurs?” I said.
“Maybe it’s not Earth,” Alan said.
“But it’s connected to another world. What do we do now?”
We returned to the Mars Rover to discuss our options.
“Communication with Earth is still not restored. Should we continue the mission or go to ……?”
“Should we enter the Monolith?” Mari interjected.
“There’s no guarantee we’ll be able to come back,” Alan objected.
“I’d like to ask for instructions from Earth, but that’s not possible. We’ll decide for ourselves. I’ll take a vote. Who is in favor of joining the Monolith?”
All raised their hands.
“It’s a B-movie situation, but when there’s an intriguing door in front of you, you want to go in. Let’s go.”
We took the Mars Rover and drove into the monolith.
