聖域にある秘密の泉で、わたしはユニコーンと水浴びをする。
彼はこの地に残る最後のユニコーンだ。わたしは幼い頃から、彼の世話をしてきた。神聖な存在のユニコーンだが、彼に触れることができるのは汚れのない処女だけなのだ。
この地は「プーラ（Pura）」と呼ばれ、中立地帯となっている。周囲を海に囲まれた小さな島だ。
ユニコーンのほかに、グリフォン、バジリスク、エアレー、ラタトスクなどがいる。聖獣がここに集められたのは、人間たちが生息域を侵してしまい、住む場所がなくなってしまったからだ。
それゆえ、ここが聖域となった。
ユニコーンの名は「アルバ・デウス・ビィスティア（Alba Deus Bestia）」。意味は「白き神の獣」だ。わたしはアルバと呼んでいる。
ユニコーンは長生きで、人の何倍も生きるという。また、ユニコーンは雄だけで雌はいない。それでどうやって子孫を残すのか疑問だった。
わたしが初潮を迎えたとき、マザーが教えてくれた。
「リーリウム（Lilium）、よく聞きなさい。ユニコーンはふさわしい人間の乙女に出会うと、一晩だけ人間の姿になるのです。そして、交わることで子を残します。これまではその相手がいませんでした。あなたが彼に選ばれるといいですね」
その話を聞いてからは、アルバの妻になりたいと切望した。
わたしはプーラで生まれ育ったから、外の世界を知らない。伝え聞くところでは、大陸の諸国では争いが絶えず、大きな戦が頻繁に起こっているという。人間同士で殺し合うなんて、わたしには理解できない。
かつては、神々が世界を統べていて、人々は平和に暮らしていた。
しかし、神々は去った。人間は神々に見捨てられ、神々の使いでもあった聖獣は取り残された。主を失った世界で、人間たちが頂点に立った。以来、世界は混沌に陥ってしまった。
それが長老たちの語る昔話だ。
いつものように秘密の泉で、アルバが来るのを待っていた。日が沈むまで待ったが、彼は来なかった。今日は来ないのだと思って、帰ろうとしたら彼が現れた。
「アルバ、もう来ないのかと思って帰るところだったの」
彼は言葉は話せないが、人の言葉は理解できる。
彼は首を振り、鼻先で自分の背中を指し示す。
「乗れといってるの？」
彼は頷いて嘶く。
わたしが彼の背に乗ると走り出した。
わたしを乗せたアルバは、森の中を奥へ、奥へと進んでいく。
「どこに行くの？」
彼は答えず、走り続けた。
夜のとばりが降りて、あたりは真っ暗。わたしには何も見えなかった。
「アルバ、恐いわ。どこまでいくの？」
やがて、アルバは息を切らせて止まった。
「ここはどこなの？」
真っ暗な闇の中に、ポツン、ポツンと小さな灯りがともる。
精霊の光だ。
光の数がどんどん増えて、松明のように明るくなる。
「綺麗。こんなにたくさんの精霊の光は初めてよ」
わたしはアルバから降りて、地面に立った。地面は苔で覆われ、ふわふわの絨毯のようだった。
「アルバ、ここは素敵なところね。アルバ？」
彼の体は光に包まれ、苦しそうにもがいていた。
「どうしたの？ アルバ！」
アルバの体は、粘土細工のように形が変化していく。
わたしは絶句して見守ることしかできなかった。
どれほど時間が経ったのかわからなかったが、彼の体が人の形に変わろうとしていた。
やがて彼は、ひとりの男性になった。彼は裸だった。
わたしは両手で顔を覆った。男性の裸なんて、見るのは初めてだった。
「驚かせてごめん、リーリウム。やっと話ができるね」
「アルバなの？」
「そう、ボクだよ。唐突だけど、ボクの妻になっておくれ」
「わたしを選んでくれたの？」
「そうだよ。200年くらい待ったかな。君に出会うまで」
「わたし、あなたの妻になるのが夢だったの」
「ボクも君に決めていたんだ。小さな女の子だったときからね」
彼は歩みよってきて、わたしを抱きしめた。
「愛してるよ、リーリウム」
「はい、アルバ。わたしも愛しています」
その夜、わたしとアルバは愛しあった。
夜が明けて目覚めると、アルバはユニコーンに戻っていた。わたしは彼の背に乗り、森を出た。
数ヶ月後、わたしは妊娠しているのを知った。
わたしはアルバの子、ユニコーンの子を産むんだ。
I bathe with a unicorn at a secret spring in the sanctuary.
He is the last unicorn left in this land. I have cared for him since I was little. The unicorn is a sacred being, but only a spotless virgin can touch him.

The name of the unicorn is “Alba Deus Bestia”. It means “Beast of the White God”. I call it Alba.
Unicorns are said to be long-lived, living many times longer than humans. Also, unicorns are only male, not female. I wondered how they could have offspring.
When I had my first menstruation, Mother told me.
“Lilium, listen carefully. When a unicorn meets a human maiden worthy of being his wife, he takes on human form for one night. Then, by mating, he leaves a child. So far, he has not had a mate. I hope you will be chosen by him.”
After hearing this story, I longed to be Alba’s wife.
I was born and raised in Pura, so I do not know the outside world. From what I had heard, the countries of the continent were in constant strife, and great battles were frequently fought. I don’t understand how humans can kill each other.
In the past, the gods ruled the world, and people lived in peace.
But then the gods left. Humans were abandoned by the gods, and the sacred beasts, which were also their messengers, were left behind. In a world that had lost its Lord, the humans rose to the top. Since then, the world has fallen into chaos.
That is the old story told by the elders.
As usual, I waited for Alba’s arrival at the secret spring. I waited until the sun went down, but he did not come. Thinking that he was not coming today, I was about to leave when he appeared.
“Alba, I was about to leave when I realized he wasn’t coming.”
He doesn’t speak the language, but he understands what people say.
He shook his head and pointed to his back with his nose.
“Are you asking me to ride?”
He nodded and neighed.
I got on his back and we started running.
Alba carries me deeper and deeper into the forest.
“Where are we going?”
He didn’t answer, but kept running.
The curtain of night had fallen and it was pitch black. I could not see anything.
“Alba, I’m scared. How far will you go?”
Eventually, Alba stopped, out of breath.
“Where are we?”
One by one, small lights appeared in the pitch blackness.
It was the light of a spirit.
The number of lights increased and became brighter and brighter, like torches.
“It’s beautiful. I’ve never seen so many spirit lights in my life.”
I got off Alba and stood on the ground. The ground was covered with moss and looked like a fluffy carpet.
“Alba, this is a beautiful place. Alba?”
His body was surrounded by light, and he struggled painfully.
“What’s wrong? Alba!”
Alba’s body was changing shape like a piece of clay.
I could only watch in amazement.
I didn’t know how much time had passed, but his body was about to change into a human form.
Eventually, he became a man. He was naked.
I covered my face with my hands. It was the first time I had ever seen a man naked.
“I’m sorry I startled you, Lilium. It’s nice to finally talk to you.”
“Are you Alba?”
“Yes, it’s me. I know this is sudden, but I want you to be my wife.”
“You’ve chosen me?”
“Yes, I waited for about 200 years. I waited maybe 200 years before I met you.”
“I’ve always wanted to be your wife.”
“I had my heart set on you, too. Ever since I was a little girl.”
He walked over to me and hugged me.
“I love you, Lilium.”
“Yes, Alba. I love you too.”
That night, Alba and I made love.
When I woke up at dawn, Alba had reverted to unicorn form. I rode on his back and left the forest.
A few months later, I found out that I was pregnant.
I was going to give birth to Alba’s child, the unicorn’s child.
