久しぶりの休暇は、プロキオンAの第六惑星「パピィ（Puppy）」のビーチで過ごす。
地球から11.46光年だが、恒星間ゲートを使えば１日で行ける。ゲートがなかった時代は、低速ワープで何年もかかっていたなんて信じられない話だ。
わたしの愛機は、宇宙軍から払い下げで買った100年もののビンテージだが、改造を加えて、最高速度は120ls/yまで出せる。このクラスの船としてはまあまあのレベル。船の名は「ラナンキュラス」で、わたしの好きな花の名前。
執事兼ボディガード・ロボットのZX-9800Wとともに、パピィまでひとっ飛び。
「ナオミお嬢様、まもなく太陽ゲートにアプローチします」
ZX-9800Wがいった。通称はゼットだ。
「ラナンキュラス号、ゲートへの進入を許可する」
管制官から通信が入った。
「こちらラナンキュラス。了解した」
わたしは応答した。
「よい旅を」
「ありがとう」
恒星間ゲートは太陽の中にある。太陽の重力を利用して空間に穴を開け、別のゲートと結ぶ。これは地球人が造ったものではなく、いまだ謎の異星人の遺産だ。主だった恒星の中心にはゲートが設置されていて、ネットワークが張られていた。ゲートを乗り継ぐことで、ワープでは何年もかかる距離でも短時間で行けるようになった。
「シールド展開。太陽に突入します」
ゼットが機械的にいった。ロボットだから機械的なのは当たり前だけど。
生身だったら一瞬で蒸発してしまう高温の太陽に、愛機ラナンキュラスは加速しながら突入する。
「まもなくゲートに突入します。５…４…３…２…１…突入」
ゼットがカウントダウンした。
機体がぐにゃりとしなるような感覚。実際には空間が歪んでいるのだが。わたしは目眩とともに気を失った。
「ナオミ様、そろそろお時間です」
ゼットの声で目が覚めた。
船はパピィの軌道に入ろうとしていた。
ゲートを抜けるのは、いつも気分が悪い。体が内側から裏返しにされるような感覚だ。ゲート理論の解明はまだ途上だが、ゲートに入る物体は分解され、別の空間を通って出口で再構築されるという。考えるとゾッとするが、便利なものは利用する。
人間は気絶してしまうが、ロボットにはそれがない。安全な航行のためには、ロボットの補佐は欠かせない。
「ナオミ様、異常を検知しました」とゼット。
「どんな異常？」
「パピィの航宙管制局が応答しません」
「どういうこと？」
「この星系には、亜空間信号を発信している人工物が存在しません」
「ゲートから出てきたんだよね？ プロキオンAに間違いないよね？」
「そのはずですが……」
「なに？ その曖昧な言い方は？」
「プロキオンAには違いないのですが、時代が違うようです」
「まさか、タイムトラベルしたとでも？ バカいわないで」
「そのバカのようです」
「冗談でしょ！」
船はパピィの周回軌道を回っていた。
「なにかわかった？」
わたしは聞いた。
「惑星上は無人です。厳密には地球人の入植者はいません。原住民の爬虫類型二足歩行種のダイノソリアンと思われる種族は見つけました。ただし、歴史的史料を参照すると、100万年ほど古い種だと推察します」
「つまり、ここは100万年前のパピィってことね」
「そういうことになります。どうなさいますか？」
「行く予定だったウエストビーチはあるのね？」
「地形が少し違っていますが、存在します」
「じゃあ、降りて。ビーチで過ごすのが目的だったんだから」
「承知しました」
船は軌道を離れ、大気圏に突入した。
わたしは水着に着替えて、海面すれすれに滞空する船から海に飛びこんだ。
パピィの海は塩分濃度が濃いので、浮力が大きい。わたしは浜辺まで泳いだ。
ゼットが先回りして、ビーチパラソルを立て、ビーチチェアをセットし、テーブルには飲みものを用意してくれた。
「ウエストビーチを独り占めなんて最高！」
わたしは叫んだ。
「ナオミ様、僭越ながら、惑星まるごと貸し切りでございます」
「そうね。ゼットのいうとおり」
釣りをして、海に潜って、狩りをして、捕れた獲物はゼットが調理した。
ダイノソリアンの祖先にも会った。言葉は原始的だけど、ゼットがサンプリングして通訳できるようになった。
彼らはわたしたちのことを「神」と思ったらしい。まぁ、恒星間ゲートを造った異星人も、わたしから見たら神みたいなものだしね。気持ちはわかる。
休暇の２週間はあっという間に過ぎた。
「ナオミ様、ここは100万年前ですから、２週間の休暇に意味はないと思うのですが？」ゼットはいった。
「まぁ、そうなんだけどね、わたしの時間では２週間は２週間なわけよ。ズルはしない主義なの」
「しかし、どうやって元の時間に戻るつもりですか？」
「ゲートから来たんだから、ゲートで帰ればいいじゃない。それ以外に方法がある？」
「たしかに、ゲートはこの時代でも存在しているようです」
「ということは、例の異星人は100万年前よりも前からゲートを使ってたのね。すごい発見じゃない？」
「学会に発表なさいますか？」
「どうでもいいわ。記録は録ってるよね？」
「はい、すべて」
「それ、帰ったらまとめて、適当なところに送っといて」
「かしこまりました」
「じゃ、帰ろう。休暇は終わり」
ラナンキュラス号はプロキオンAのゲートに突入した。
いつものように気絶して、ゼットに起こされた。
「どう？ 戻れた？」
わたしは聞いた。
「はい、ナオミ様。不思議なことに、わたしたちが太陽ゲートに突入した直後の時間に戻りました」
「ええ？ つまり、こっちの時間ではまだ数分しか経ってないってこと？」
「そういうことになります」
「ラッキー！ 休暇はまだ２週間あるのね」
「ナオミ様、ズルはしないのでは？」
「だって、こっちの時計ではまだ休暇中よ。どこ行こうか？」
「どこへでもお供いたします」
「じゃーねー、タウ・セチに行こう！」
「では、管制局にゲートの使用申請をします」
「ちょっと寝るわ。時間になったら起こして」
「了解しました」
数時間後、わたしたちはタウ・セチ行きのゲートに突入した。
Vacation for the first time in a long time is spent on the beach of “Puppy”, the sixth planet of Procyon A.
It’s 11.46 light years from Earth, but with the interstellar gate, it can be reached in a day. It’s hard to believe that back in the days when there were no gates, slow warp would have taken years.
My ship is a 100 year old vintage one that I bought on loan from the Space Force, and with some modifications, it can reach a top speed of 120ls/y. For a ship of this class, it’s pretty good. The name of the ship is “Ranunculus”, the name of my favorite flower.
I flew to Puppy with my butler and bodyguard robot, ZX-9800W.
“Lady Naomi, we will be approaching the solar gate shortly.”
The ZX-9800W said. The ZX-9800W, also known as the Zed.
“The Ranunculus is cleared to enter the gate.”
This is Ranunculus.
“This is Ranunculus. Roger that.”
I responded.
“Have a nice trip.”
“Thank you.”
The interstellar gate is in the sun. It uses the gravity of the sun to create a hole in space that connects to another gate. It was not built by earthlings, but by an alien heritage that is still a mystery. Gates were set up at the centers of the major stars, and a network was set up. By transiting the gates, distances that would take years to travel at warp could be reached in a short time.
“Shield deployment. We’re entering the sun.”
Zed said mechanically. He was a robot, so it was only natural that he was mechanical.
The sun was so hot that it would have vaporized us in an instant if we were alive, but our beloved Ranunculus accelerated into the sun.
“We’ll be entering the gate shortly…five…four…three…two…one…enter.”
Zed counted down.
The aircraft felt like it was squirming. In reality, though, the space is distorting. I was dizzy and fainted.
“Lady Naomi, it’s time to go.”
Zed’s voice woke me up.
The ship was about to enter Puppy’s orbit.
Going through the gate was always a bad feeling. It’s like my body is being turned inside out. The gate theory is still in its infancy, but it says that objects entering the gate are disassembled and reassembled at the exit through a different space. I shudder to think about it, but I’ll take advantage of the convenience.
Humans faint, but robots do not. The assistance of robots is essential for safe navigation.
“Lady Naomi, we’ve detected an anomaly,” Zed said.
“What kind of anomaly?”
“Puppy’s air traffic control is not responding.”
“What do you mean?”
“There are no artifacts transmitting subspace signals in this system.”
“We came out of the gate, didn’t we? Procyon A, you’re sure?”
“Yes, it should be, but ……
“What? How vague is that?”
“It’s definitely Procyon A, but it’s from a different time period.”
“Are you telling me we’ve time traveled? Don’t be stupid.”
“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”
“You’re kidding!”
The ship was in Puppy’s orbit.
“What did you find out?”
I asked.
“The planet is uninhabited. Strictly speaking, there are no Earth colonists. We have found what we believe to be an indigenous reptilian bipedal race, the Dinosorians. However, based on historical references, I would guess that the species is about a million years old.”
“That means we’re in a million-year-old Puppy.”
“That’s what I’m thinking. What do we do now?”
” We’ re going to West Beach, right?
“The terrain’s a little different, but it’s there.”
“Well, get off. We were going to spend the day at the beach.”
“Yes, sir.”
The ship left orbit and entered the atmosphere.
I changed into my swimwear and jumped into the sea from the ship that was hovering just above the surface.
Puppy’s sea has a high salt concentration, which makes it very buoyant. I swam to the beach.
Zed had gone ahead and set up a beach parasol, beach chairs, and a table with drinks.
“I love having West Beach all to myself!”
I exclaimed.
” Lady Naomi, if I may be so bold, we have the entire planet to ourselves.
“You’re right. Zed was right.”
We fished, dove in the ocean, hunted, and Zed cooked our catch.
We also met the ancestors of the Dinosorians. The language was primitive, but Zed sampled it and was able to interpret it.
They thought we were “Gods”. Well, the aliens who built the interstellar gate were Gods to me, too. I know how they feel.
The two weeks of vacation passed in a blur.
“Lady Naomi, since this is a million years ago, I don’t think a two-week vacation makes sense, does it?” Zed said.
“Well, yes, but in my time, two weeks is two weeks. I’m not a cheater.”
“But how are you going to get back to your original time?”
“We came through the gate, so why don’t we just go back through the gate? What else is there to do?”
“Well, it seems that gates still exist in this time.”
” So, the aliens have been using the gate for longer than a million years. Isn’t that an amazing discovery?”
“Are you going to present it at the conference?”
“I don’t care. You’re keeping records, aren’t you?”
“Yes, everything.”
“When you get home, put them together and send them to the appropriate people.”
“All right, sir.”
“Okay, let’s go home. Vacation’s over.”
The Ranunculus rushed into the Procyon A gate.
I passed out as usual, and Zed woke me up.
” Hey, how’s it going? Did you make it back?”
I asked.
“Yes, Lady Naomi. Strangely enough, we’ve returned to the time right after we entered the solar gate.”
“What? That means it’s only been a few minutes in our time?”
“That’s what it means.”
“Lucky! I still have two weeks of vacation left.”
“Lady Naomi, you don’t cheat, do you?”
“Because on my watch, I’m still on vacation. Where shall we go?”
“I’ll take you wherever you want to go.”
“All right, let’s go to Tau Ceti!”
“Now, I’m going to apply to ATC to use the gate.”
“I’m in bed. Wake me when it’s time.”
“Yes, sir.”
A few hours later, we entered the gate for Tau Ceti.
