水星の地下都市では、空気と水はゴールドと同等の価値がある。
カロリス盆地の地下に建設された、水星最大の地下都市「カロリス・ヘブン」は、35層もの深さを誇る。垂直断面がスズメバチの巣に似ていることから、アルウス（alvus）とも呼ばれる。
地球では高層ビルが、上へ、上へと伸びてきたように、水星では地下に、下へ、下へのと伸びてきた。地表温度は160℃〜420℃になる灼熱地獄であり、この温度では水銀が気化する。
水星は快適な惑星ではない。都市が建設されたのは重金属の資源が豊富だったからで、元々は採掘のためだった。
特に注目されたのは、金、銀、プラチナといった貴金属だ。それは採掘労働者を集めるための呼び水となった。一攫千金を夢見るものたちが集まり、20世紀以来のゴールドラッシュが起こった。
水星は地球の植民地ではあるが、地球政府の支配を受けない治外法権惑星となり、独自の自治権を確立した。高度なテクノロジーによって建設された都市だが、水星の社会は中世のような階級社会となった。
階級が上の者たちほど地下の深い階層で暮らし、低い身分のものは地上に近い階層に暮らす。深い地下ほど、放射線や高温の影響を受けにくいため、安全で快適なのだ。
地球の法治支配が及ばないため、水星には犯罪者や亡命者が集まることにもなった。水星はそれを歓迎した。企業のトップが王となり、王国には多くの臣民が必要だったからだ。
水星に、王制と封建制度が復活した。
水星生まれの水星育ちの水星人世代が増えてくると、水星の社会構造を変えようとする動きが出てきた。
歴史は繰り返すだ。中世の封建制度が崩れたように、水星でも抑圧された市民達が自由と平等を求めて立ち上がった。
その象徴的な存在が「ヴァージン・ヘルメス」だった。
彼女は歌とダンスで太陽系のスターとなったが、同時に水星の解放運動を牽引する女神にもなった。
今や伝説的な存在だが、わたしたちの戦いはまだ終わっていない。
アルウスの第３層より上は、旧市街と呼ばれ、スラム街になっていた。水星の開拓初期に建設された階層で、設備は古く、メンテナンスも十分ではないため、住環境としては安全とはいえない。
しかし、レジスタンスの隠れ場所としては適していた。
わたしの名は、インファ・ジュビラント、地球年で18歳になったばかり。ヴァージン・ヘルメスことラビ・ジュビラントの娘だ。
母の活躍により、水星は独立を果たした。がしかし、それは長続きしなかった。旧勢力が盛り返して軍事クーデターを起こし、社会情勢は不安定になった。現在は、内乱状態だ。
新政府の主要な人物は暗殺されるか、水星を脱出した。脱出するだけの財力がない者は、隠れて抵抗するしかない。レジスタンスは自由の戦いであると同時に、生き残るための戦いだ。
独立運動の陰の立て役者だったレディ・スネークは、水星に残り、わたしたちを支援してくれている。彼女は頼りになる人だ。
母は……、ヴァージン・ヘルメスは水星にいない。公演のため地球を訪れているときに、水星が封鎖されてしまって戻れなくなった。
レジスタンスといっても、できることには限度がある。地球の歴史では、爆破テロとかあったみたいだけど、水星では無理。大規模な破壊をすると、わたしたち自身の命も危険にさらしてしまう。
水星は地獄の星なのだ。カロリス・ヘブンという名は願望で、実際にはカロリス・ヘルだ。隔壁に穴が空いて外部環境にさらされたら、わたしたちはバーベキューになる。
主な攻撃は、ハッキングだ。複雑な水星都市を維持しているのは都市ＡＩだから、そこから情報やリソースを盗んだり書き換えたりする。旧市街の電源を断たれると困るから、偽装したりもする。
隠れ家のひとつでハッキングを仕掛けていたら、ブービートラップが反応した。
「治安部隊だ！ 逃げるぞ！」
リーダーの指示で、わたしたちは迷路になっている旧市街の地下通路に潜りこんだ。６人のメンバーは、２人１組になって分かれて逃げる。わたしはリーダーと一緒だ。
銃声が聞こえてきた。誰かが見つかったのだ。
「くそっ。今日の奴らは足が速いな。インファ、先に行け」彼はいった。
「バカいわないで。わたしだって戦える」
わたしは銃を構えた。
「勇ましいのは母譲りだな。だが、ラビの娘を死なせるわけにはいかない。ラビに怒鳴られるのはごめんだからな」
「ママは関係ない。わたしだってレジスタンスの一員なの」
「おまえがどう思っていようが、ヴァージン・ヘルメスの娘は特別なんだよ。死なないまでも、捕まったりしたら敵の思う壺だ」
再び銃声が響く。音は近くなっていた。
旧市街は、使える監視カメラやセンサーが少ない。姿を隠すレジスタンスには利点だが、敵の位置も把握しにくくなる。
「まずいな。奴らがどこにいるのかわからなくなった」彼はいった。
赤いレーザー光が視界を横切った。レーザースコープだ。
「ダダダダダダ」
自動小銃の銃声が間近で鳴った。
リーダーとわたしは音の方向に、撃ち返した。当たるはずはないが、牽制にはなる。
突然、彼が倒れた。
「リーダー？」
「腹を撃たれた。インファ、逃げるんだ」
「置いては行けない！」
「オレのことより、自分のことを考えろ。おまえは水星の未来に必要なんだ」
「わたしはママとは違う。ママのようにはなれない！」
「そうでもないと思うぞ」彼は無理に笑った。
「インファ・ジュビラントだな？ 武器を捨てて投降しろ」
通路の暗闇から敵がいった。彼らは赤外線で見ているのだ。
「投降するつもりはない」わたしは返答した。
わたしは覚悟を決め、銃を構えた。
《インファ、目を閉じて伏せなさい》
耳の中の通信機から、レディ・スネークの声が聞こえた。わたしは目を閉じ、ゴミだらけの床に伏せた。
爆発音と閃光。そして、静寂が訪れた。
爆薬の刺激臭と煙の中から、レディ・スネークが姿を現した。
「まったく、誰に似たのかしらね。このじゃじゃ馬娘は」
「レディ！ ありがとう！」
「こんなクズどもに命を賭けちゃダメよ」
「まさか助けにきてくれるなんて、なんてお礼を言えばいいのか」
「通りかかっただけよ。それよりも、この前の話、考えてくれた？」
「ステージのことですか？」
「そう。わたしのステージに出ないかって話」
「わたしには向いてないです」
「ラビとザックの子なんだから、サラブレッドなのよ。素質と才能の保証書付」
「でも……」
「レジスタンスには資金も必要なの。あなたが稼げばみんなが助かる」
リーダーが呻き声を出した。
「割りこんで申し訳ないが、ちょっと腹に穴が空いちまって、医者まで連れて行ってほしいのだが？」
「リーダー！ ごめんなさい」
レディが合図をすると、数人の男たちがリーダーを抱えると足早に去って行った。
「インファ、次はいい返事を期待しているわ」
去って行くレディに対して、わたしは深々と頭を下げた。

The area above the third level of Alvus was called the Old City, and was a slum. It was built in the early days of Mercury’s development, and the facilities were old and not well maintained, so it was not a safe place to live.
However, it was a suitable hiding place for the resistance.

Mercury is a planet of hell. The name “Caloris Heaven” is a wish, it’s actually Caloris Hell. If there is a hole in the bulkhead and we are exposed to the outside environment, we will be barbecued.
The main attack is hacking. The city AI maintains the complex Mercury city, so it steals and rewrites information and resources from it. We can’t afford to have the old city’s power cut off, so we’ll have to disguise it.
I was setting up a hack in one of the safe houses and the booby trap responded.

On the leader’s orders, we dove into the maze of underground passageways in the old city. 6 members split into pairs to escape. I was with the leader.
We hear a gunshot. Someone had been found.

“Don’t be silly. I can fight too.”
I raised my gun.
“Bravery is a trait of your mother. But I can’t let the rabi’s daughter die. I don’t want the rabi yelling at me.”
“I don’t care about my mother. I’m a member of the Resistance.”
“Regardless of what you think, the daughter of the Virgin Hermes is special. You may not be dead, but if you are captured, that’s exactly what the enemy wants.”
The sound of gunfire echoed again. The sound was getting closer.
There are few surveillance cameras and sensors available in the old city. This is an advantage for the resistance to hide themselves, but it also makes it harder for them to locate the enemy.
“That’s not good. I don’t know where they are anymore,” he said.
A red laser beam crossed my field of vision. It was a laser scope.

The sound of automatic weapons fire rang out nearby.
The leader and I shot back in the direction of the sound. There was no way we could hit them, but it was a good check.

“Leader?”

“I don’t think so,” he forced himself to laugh.
“Yinghua Jubilant, is it? Drop your weapons and surrender.”
The enemy said from the darkness of the corridor. They are watching us in the infrared.
“I’m not going to surrender,” I replied.
I made up my mind and raised my gun.
[ Yinghua, close your eyes and get down. ]
I heard Lady Snake’s voice from the communicator in my ear. I closed my eyes and got down on the garbage floor.
There was an explosion and a flash of light. Then there was silence.
Through the acrid smell of explosives and smoke, Lady Snake emerged.
“Good grief, who do you look like? You’re a wayward girl.”
“Lady! Thank you!”
“Don’t risk your life for these scum.”
“I don’t know how to thank you for coming to save me.”
“I was just passing through. Have you thought about what we talked about?”
“You mean the stage?”
“Yes. You’re asking me to be on stage with you.”
“I’m not cut out for it.”
“You’re the son of Rabi and Zack. You’re a thoroughbred. Guaranteed talent.”

“The Resistance needs money, too. The more money you make, the better off we all are.”
The leader groaned.
