戦いの末、ノトス国の玉座を手に入れたが、達成感より虚しさを感じた。
キングはあらゆるものを手に入れられる。権力、領土、金、美食、そして女。それが前キングを倒した挑戦者の報酬だ。
オレはティグリス。ついに頂点に立った。
キングになることは目標であり欲望でもあった。しかし、この虚脱感はなんだろう。オレは物足りなさを感じていた。
玉座を手に入れて、初めて気がついた。オレはキングになりたかったのではなく、玉座を手に入れるまでの戦いをしたかったのだと。
その戦いは終わった。
次の挑戦者がオレに戦いを挑んでくるだろうが、キングの座を守る戦いには興味が湧かなかった。
キングは国を統治する。だが、首がすげ変わったとしても、実質的に国を動かしているのは官吏達だ。オレは最終的な決定を下すだけ。この国をどんな国にしたいかの野心や理想はなかった。それは戦士のすることではない。
玉座に座って１か月もすると、オレは退屈してきた。オレにはキングとしての適性がないのだろう。
「隣国を攻めてはいかがでしょうか？」
官吏のひとりがいった。
「なんのために？」
「領土を広げられますし、女や奴隷も手に入ります」
「足りていないのか？」
「多くて困ることはないでしょう」
「オレより強い奴がいるのか？」
「我が王以上に強い者をおりません」
「それでは攻める意味がない。軍隊の戦いは好かん。数の勝負だからな」
夜が更けて寝室に行くと、ベッドで女が待っていた。
「王様、わたしが今晩のお供をします」
官吏は毎晩違う女をよこす。彼女は金色の髪をしていた。
「見慣れない女だな、名はなんという？ どこから来た？」
この国では黒髪が普通だからだ。
「キエロ（Kielo）と申します。北の大陸にあるフィンス（Fins）の出身です」
「ずいぶん遠くから来たな。さらわれたのか？」
「10歳のときに売られました。貧しい家で養える子供の数は限られていますので」
「北の大陸では街が雪で埋まるらしいな。ノトス国では雪は高い山にしか降らない」
「はい。雪は人の背丈ほど積もります」
「おまえの故郷の話を聞かせろ」
オレは見知らぬ国の話に聞き入った。
キエロは転々と売られて、ノトス国まで来たといった。オレも奴隷として売られた身だから、その辛さはわかる。のし上がるためには戦士として強くなり、倒した相手の身分と地位を手に入れるしかなかった。
この世界では、欲しいものは持っている奴から、手段はどうあれ奪うのが習わしだ。彼女が王宮に入れる女になったのは、彼女なりの戦いを生き抜いた結果だ。彼女は強かな女なのだ。
オレはキエロを第一夫人にした。これで彼女はこの国の女たちの頂点に立ったことになる。
あるとき、彼女に欲しいものはないかと聞いた。
「ティグリス王、フィンス国が欲しゅうございます」
「おまえの故郷が欲しいと？」
「わたしを捨てた国です。かの国は女王が支配する国。攻め落とすのは容易でしょう」
「復讐か？ それは戦う理由になるな。いいだろう。おまえの望みを叶えてやろう」
フィンス国は遠い。その間にある諸国から我が手中に収める必要があった。オレは軍隊を率いて戦いに明け暮れた。軍隊戦は好かぬと思っていたが、やってみると別の面白さがあった。ノトス軍は破竹の勢いで北上していった。
５年後。フィンス国への足がかりとなる国を手に入れた。我が軍がフィンス国を攻略する準備をしていると、フィンス国の使者が来た。
フィンス国は降伏するという。戦わずして負けを認めるのは理解できなかったが、キエロの欲しいものを手に入れてやった。
オレの目的は達した。
10年後。キエロは５人の子を産んだ。ほかの女たちの子を合わせると20人になる。過去の王がこれほど子だくさんになったことはなかった。王に就いている期間が短かったからだ。オレは挑戦者をことごとく退けてきたのだ。
子供たちを有能な官吏とともに、支配下の諸国の統治者として送り出した。いつしかティグリス帝国と呼ばれるようになった。オレが名付けたのではなく、官吏たちの策だ。まぁ、それも悪くない。
帝国の版図が広がると、人と物の流れが活発になり、様々な情報も入ってくるようになった。
情報の中に、西の海を越えた先に別の大陸があり、黄金で栄えた国があるというのがあった。世界には、まだ未知の領域があるのだ。オレは興味を持った。
オレは決断した。
王位を長男に譲り、西の大陸に行く。王の地位に未練はない。オレはかつてのように剣で戦い、己の道を切り開いていきたい。戦いこそがオレの本分だ。
だが、ひとりではない。
「キエロ、一緒に来るか？」
「はい、ティグリス王。わたしはあなたとともに生きる所存です」
「もう王ではない。ひとりの戦士だ。それでもよいか？」
「もちろんです。わたしはあなたの妻です」
「よし。では共に行こう」
オレとキエロは、西の海を渡る航海に出た。
新たな冒険の始まりだ。

The King rules the country. But even if the head is changed, it’s the officials who really run the country. I just make the final decision. I didn’t have any ambitions or ideals about what kind of country I wanted this to be. That’s not what a warrior does.
After a month on the throne, I was getting bored. I guess I’m not fit to be a king.
“Why don’t we attack the neighboring country?”
One of the officials said.
“What for?”
“We can expand our territory, get women and slaves.”
“Don’t you have enough?”
“We’ ll never have enough.”
“Who’s stronger than me?”
“No one is stronger than my king.”
“Then there is no point in attacking me. I don’t like to fight with armies, it’s a game of numbers.”
When night fell, I went to my bedroom and found a woman waiting for me in my bed.
“I’ll be your companion this evening, my king.”
The official sent a different woman every night. She had golden hair.
“You don’t look familiar, what’s your name? Where are you from?”
Because dark hair is the norm in this country.
“My name is Kielo and I’m from Fins, on the northern continent.”
“You’ve come a long way. Were you kidnapped?”
“I was sold when I was ten years old. There are only so many children a poor family can support.”
“I heard that in the northern continent, the cities are covered with snow. In Notos, the snow falls only on the highest mountains.”
“Yes. The snow is as tall as a man.”
“Tell me the story of your homeland.”
I listened to the story of an unfamiliar country.
Kielo said that he had been sold from place to place and had come to the country of Notos. I was also sold into slavery, so I know how hard it is. The only way to rise to the top was to become strong as a warrior and obtain the status and position of the person you defeated.
In this world, it is customary to take what you want from those who have it, no matter the means. The fact that she has become a woman who can enter the royal court is the result of her having survived her own battles. She is a strong woman.
I’ve made Kielo my first wife. This put her on top of all the women in the country.
One day, I asked her if there was anything she wanted.
“King Tigris, I want the Kingdom of Fins.”
“You want your homeland?”
“The country that abandoned me. This is the country where the queen rules. It will be easy to overrun.”
“Revenge? That’s a good reason to fight. All right. I’ll give you what you want.”
The Fins are far away. I needed to take control of the countries in between. I led my army into battle. I thought I didn’t like military battles, but there was a different kind of interest when I tried it. The Notos army was moving northward at a breakneck pace.
Five years later. We have gained a foothold in the country of Fins. As my army was preparing to attack the Fins, a messenger from the Fins came.
The Fins said they would surrender. I couldn’t understand why they would admit defeat without a fight, but I got what Kielo wanted.
I had achieved my goal.
Ten years later. Kielo gave birth to five children. With the other women’s children, the total was twenty. No king in history had ever had so many children. It was because his reign was so short. I’ve fought off every challenger I’ve had.
I sent my children out to rule the nations under my control, along with capable officials. It became known as the Tigris Empire. I didn’t name it, it was the officials’ idea. Well, that’s not so bad.
As the empire’s territory expanded, the flow of people and goods became more active, and various information began to come in.
One of the pieces of information was that there was another continent beyond the western sea, and that there was a country that prospered from gold. There were still uncharted territories in the world. I was intrigued.
I’ve made my decision.
I will hand over the throne to my eldest son and go to the western continent. I have no regrets about my position as king. I want to fight with my sword and carve out my own path, just as I did in the past. Fighting is what I’m meant to do.
But I will not be alone.
“Kielo, will you come with me?”
“Yes, King Tigris. I am willing to live with you.”
“I’m not a king anymore, I’m a warrior. Is that what you want?”
“Of course. I am your wife.”
“Good. Then let us go together.”
Me and Kielo set out on a voyage across the western sea.
It was the beginning of a new adventure.
