新宿地下ダウンタウンで、サイバー・ライブ（略してCy-Li）の配信をする。
Cy-Liは3Dホログラムメディアで、視聴者はロケ地にいるかのようなリアル感を味わえる。立体映像と音だけでなく、匂い、温度、風の感覚まで再現できる。
わたしはCy-Liナビゲーターとして、みんなにいろんな体験を届けている。
「Hi! イリスでーす。今日は新宿地下ダウンタウンに来ています。ちょっとヤバイ噂があるところだけど、潜入したいと思います」
わたしは露出度の高いコンチュームで、ホロカメラドローン（HCD）に向かって笑顔でしゃべった。女としてのセクシーさを見せるのは、古典的だけど普遍的な手法だ。
HCDにはＡＩが搭載されていて、自動でわたしを追って撮りながら、状況に合わせてパンしたりズームしたりでホロシーンを演出してくれる。有能なカメラマンであり監督というわけ。
「みなさんご存じのように、新宿地下ダウンタウンは地下都市建設の初期に造られた古い街です。今でも住んでいる人はいますが、半分はゴーストタウンとなっています。建物の劣化も著しく、なんともいえない変な臭いが漂っています。うわっ、これはマスクしないとダメだわ」
わたしは用意していたガスマスクを装着した。
「マスクをしていても臭いは感じますが、我慢できるレベルです。みなさんも臭いレベルを下げてくださいね。では、もっと奥に進んでいきます」
地球が氷河期に突入して200年あまり。北緯30度および南緯30度より高緯度の地域は、雪と氷に覆われた。かつての栄華を誇った都市の多くが住めない環境となり、地下に都市を建設することになった。
氷河期はさらに進んで、やがては全球凍結するだろうと予想されている。
世界の交通と物流が困難となり、エネルギーと食糧は枯渇して人口は激減し、国家は意味をなさなくなった。 人々は都市単位で孤立した。
絶望の100年ののち、再生の100年が訪れた。
人々は地下都市を拡大することで、生存環境を確保した。その資源となったのは、地上に残された都市だった。廃墟と化した地上の都市は、資源の宝庫だったのだ。生活空間だけでなく、各種工場も地下に建設された。
幸いにも、海が氷っても海底ケーブルは生き残ったため、世界をつなぐネットワークは限定的ながら利用できた。ＩＴ技術の復活と発展のお陰で、Cy-Li技術が開発された。人々は気楽に地上に出たり旅行したりはできなくなったが、部屋に引きこもったままでも疑似体験ができるようになったのだ。
わたしは10階分くらいの階段を登り続けた。息が上がり、足腰がクタクタになった。
「はぁ、はぁ、だいぶ上層階に来ました。地上が近くなっているため、気温が低いですね。えーと、マイナス３℃です。漏水した床は氷っています」
吐く息が白くなる。
「寒くないのかと質問が飛んできましたが、コスチュームはヒーター内蔵ですので大丈夫ですよ。でも、やっぱり空気は冷たく寒く感じます」
目的地までもう少し。
「地下５階まで来ました。わたしたちの住んでいるところが地下２０階ですから、かなり上です。ここから西方向に歩いて行きます。障害物がなければ30分くらいで辿り着くはずです」
冷たい風が吹き抜けていく。視聴者もそれを感じただろう。
「あ、見えてきました」
前方が明るくなり、風景は雪と氷で白化粧している。
「これはすごい！」
わたしは本当に驚いていた。
そこは天井が陥没して大きな穴が開き、空が見えていた。穴の直径は１kmほどだといわれていた。陥没する前は海があった。流れ落ちる海水が氷瀑となり、氷のカーテンのようになっていた。
かつて都庁があった場所なので、都庁氷瀑と呼ばれている。都庁の残骸は瓦礫の山になっていた。
「初めて来ましたが、これは絶景ですね。空の天気が晴れでよかった。光がキラキラと反射して、とても綺麗です」
地下都市に空はない。どこに行っても天井がある。そこで育った世代には、当たり前のこと。視界にはいつも柱や壁があり、それが世界を支えている。
だから、なにも支えるものがない空が、不思議で恐くなる。空が落ちてくるような錯覚に陥ってしまうのだ。
「これは……恐いですね。寒さじゃなくて、恐怖で体が震えます。絶景と恐怖の合わせ技です。みなさん、体感していますか？」
わたしは本当に恐くて、逃げ出したい気分だった。
穴蔵の中の方が、暖かくて安全なのだ。
I’ll be streaming Cyber Live (Cy-Li for short) in the Shinjuku underground downtown.
Cy-Li is a 3D holographic media that allows viewers to experience the realism of being on location, not only with 3D images and sounds, but also with the sensations of smell, temperature, and wind.
As a Cy-Li navigator, I’m delivering various experiences to everyone.
“Hi, I’m Iris. Today, I’m at Shinjuku Underground Downtown. There are some bad rumors about this place, but I’d like to go undercover.”
I smiled and spoke into the Holo-camera drone (HCD) in a highly revealing costume. Showing a woman’s sexiness is a classic but universal technique.
The HCD is equipped with an AI that automatically follows me and takes pictures, panning and zooming to create a holo-scene according to the situation. It’s a very capable cameraman and director.
“As you all know, Shinjuku Underground Downtown is an old town built in the early days of underground city construction. There are still people living there, but half of it is now a ghost town. The buildings have deteriorated significantly, and there is a strange smell in the air. Ugh! this smell is unbearable without a mask.”
I put on the gas mask I had prepared.
“Even with the mask on, I could still smell it, but it was bearable. Please lower the smell level, everyone. Then we’ll go further in.”
It has been a little over 200 years since the Earth entered an ice age. Areas higher than 30 degrees north and south latitudes were covered with snow and ice. Many of the once flourishing cities became uninhabitable and were forced to build underground.
It is predicted that the ice age will continue and eventually the entire world will freeze over.
Global transportation and logistics will become difficult, energy and food supplies will be depleted, population will plummet, and nations will become meaningless. People were isolated in cities.
After a century of despair, a century of rebirth has arrived.
The people secured their survival environment by expanding their underground cities. It was the cities left above ground that became their resources. The ruined cities above ground were a treasure trove of resources. Not only living spaces, but also various factories were built underground.
Fortunately, the submarine cables survived the ice, so the network connecting the world was available on a limited basis. With the revival and development of IT technology, Cy-Li technology was developed. People can no longer comfortably go to the ground or travel, but they can still have simulated experiences from the comfort of their rooms.
I continued to climb the stairs, which were about ten stories high. My breath hitched and my legs and feet felt exhausted.
“Huh, huh, I’ve reached the upper floors. Since the ground is getting closer, the temperature is lower. Let’s see, it’s minus 3 °C. The leaky floor is icy.”
My breath turns white.
“The audience asked me if it was cold, but the costume has a built-in heater, so it’s fine. But the air still feels cold and chilly.”
Almost to the destination.
“I am almost at the fifth basement level. We live on the twentieth basement floor, so we’re pretty high up. We’ll walk west from here. If there are no obstacles, we should be able to reach our destination in about 30 minutes.”
A cold wind blew through the air. The viewers must have felt it too.
“Oh, I can see it now.”
The sky ahead brightened, and the landscape was white with snow and ice.
“This is amazing!”
I was truly amazed.
The ceiling had caved in and a huge hole had opened up, revealing the sky. The hole was said to be about 1 km in diameter. Before the cave-in, there was an ocean. The seawater flowing down from the hole had turned into an ice fall, forming a curtain of ice.
It is called the “Tocyo Icefall” because it was once the site of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The wreckage of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government was a pile of rubble.
“I had never been here before, but this was a spectacular sight. I was lucky that the sky was clear. I’m glad the sky was clear, the light reflected off the ice and it’s really beautiful.”
There is no sky in the underground city. Everywhere you go, there is a ceiling. For the generation that grew up there, it is a matter of course. There are always pillars and walls in sight, and they support the world.
That is why the sky, with nothing to support it, is so strange and scary. It’s as if the sky is falling.
“This is …… scary. My body shakes, not from cold, but from fear. It’s a combination of spectacular scenery and fear. Are you experiencing this?”
I was really scared and wanted to run away.
It was warmer and safer for us in the cave.
