彼らは銀河中心ブラックホールの近傍まで来た。
渦巻くガスが加熱されて輝き、漆黒の穴に向かって吸い込まれていく。
そして、亜空間通信の発信源と思われる惑星が、ブラックホールを回る軌道上に見つかった。
アンドロイドのPQ-10に感情はないが、初めて見る光景を注視した。それは感銘と呼ぶものかもしれない。
PQ-10は、指揮下の３体のアンドロイドに人間のクルーをコールドスリープから起こすための作業に取りかからせた。そのほかのアンドロイドたちには、宇宙船のメンテナンスと謎の惑星Ｘについての観測を行わせる。
相手が何者であれ、人類よりも優れた科学技術を持つ知性体だ。友好的である保証はなく、通信は呼び寄せるための罠である可能性もあった。
人間は発見したものに名前をつけたがる。
惑星Ｘは「ディアボロス」と名付けられた。ギリシア語で悪魔の意だ。
「なるほど、人間はこの光景に悪魔を感じるのか」PQ-10は思った。
名前は識別するための符号でしかなく、どんな名前でもかまわない。
PQ-10はディアボロスの観測結果を、キャプテンに報告した。
ディアボロスの大きさは、ほぼ地球と同じ。呼吸可能な大気はあり、気温はマイナス10℃〜0℃の範囲。地表は大部分が赤茶けた砂漠で、凍結した湖が点在していた。火星に似ているともいえるが、火星ほど乾燥はしていない。
植物などの生命の兆候は見られず、酸素が豊富な理由は不明。熱源となる恒星がないにもかかわらず極寒ではないのは、惑星内部からの熱によるものだと推察された。
観測と計算から、ディアボロスはブラックホールを約１万年の周期で回っているようだ。ブラックホールに飲みこまれた恒星系の残骸か、捉えられた放浪惑星なのかもしれない。
銀河核ブラックホールは、ダークマターがブラックホール化したものであり、恒星のブラックホール化とは成因が違う。重力で影響を及ぼすことは同じだが、材料が違うのだ。
ガスや恒星がブラックホールに引き寄せられるように、ダークマターも引き寄せられている。宇宙船の周囲のダークマター濃度は濃くなっていた。
惑星の地表には、いくつかの人工物が確認された。発信者がいるのかもしれないが、こちらの呼びかけには応答がなかった。
人間たちは着陸を考えていた。
「未知のリスクが大きすぎます。彼らの意図が不明です。上陸調査ならば、我々アンドロイドが行きます。個体の損失はたいした問題ではありません」
PQ-10は提言した。
船のＡＩと同様に、アンドロイドには問題解決のための発言権が与えられている。冷静で的確な分析ができるからだ。人間は衝動的に行動する傾向がある。
協議の結果、アンドロイド４体で上陸することになった。
PQ-10は、自らを４体の中に含めた。チーフ・アンドロイドがリスクのある上陸任務に就くことは異例だが、任命権はチーフにあるから自分を指名することは可能だ。
「わたしの好奇心だったのかもしれない」彼女はいった。
PQ-10の科学的好奇心は、ブラックホールに魅了されていたのだろう。
アンドロイドだけで惑星に着陸するメリットは、生命維持をする必要がないことだ。着陸艇を与圧する必要はないし、上陸するのに宇宙服も必要ない。毒性のある大気でもアンドロイドには問題がない。人間を行かせることのリスクは、生命維持が足枷になってしまうことなのだ。
PQ-10が乗った着陸艇は、ディアボロスの大気圏に突入した。
高度100kmを切ったとき、周囲の様子が一変した。
荒涼とした惑星ではなく、まるで地球のような海と緑の大地に青い空が出現した。
「どういうことだ？ 機器は正常か？」PQ-10はいった。
「異常なし。地表の温度が約20℃と高くなっています。原因不明」RK-08が報告した。
「母船との通信リンクが途絶」NYT-03がいった。
「地上からの通信を受信」ESW-01がいった。
「つなぎなさい」とPQ-10。
「ようこそ、我が星へ。諸君を歓迎する」
彼らは我々の言語で話しかけてきた。しかし、着陸艇は自由を奪われ、未知の存在に操られていた。
「歓迎だと？ これのどこが歓迎なんだ？」
これはトラップだ。予想された最悪の事態でもある。PQ-10はこれを危惧していた。
「わたしが来て正解だった。全員、武装せよ」
PQ-10は人間の常套句を引用する。
「では、パーティーに行くとしよう」
They came to the vicinity of the galactic center black hole.
The swirling gas glowed as it heated and was sucked toward the jet-black hole.
Then, the planet that seemed to be the source of the subspace communication was found in orbit around the black hole.
The android PQ-10 had no emotions, but it gazed at the scene for the first time. It might be what you call impressed.
PQ-10 had the three androids under his command begin the task of waking the human crew from their cold sleep. The other androids would be tasked with maintaining the spaceship and making observations about the mysterious Planet X.
Whoever they were, they were intelligent beings with technology superior to humanity. There was no guarantee that they would be friendly, and the communication could have been a trap to attract them.
Humans like to give names to their discoveries.
Planet X was named “Diabolos”. The Greek word for devil.
“I see,” PQ-10 thought, “the humans feel the devil in this sight.”
A name is just a code for identification, and any name will do.
PQ-10 reported his observations of Diabolos to the captain.
Diabolos is roughly the same size as Earth. It has a breathable atmosphere, with temperatures ranging from minus 10 to 0 °C. The surface was mostly a reddish brown desert, dotted with frozen lakes. It could be said to be similar to Mars, but it is not as dry as Mars.
There are no signs of life such as plants, and the reason for the abundance of oxygen is unknown. The reason why it is not extremely cold despite the absence of a star as a heat source is presumed to be due to the heat from inside the planet.
From observations and calculations, it appears that Diabolos orbits a black hole with a period of about 10,000 years. It may be a remnant of a stellar system swallowed by a black hole, or a captured wandering planet.
A galactic core black hole is a black hole of dark matter, which is different from a stellar black hole. The gravitational influence is the same, but the materials are different.
Just as gas and stars are attracted to black holes, dark matter is also attracted. The dark matter concentration around the spaceship was getting thicker.
A few artifacts were observed on the planet’s surface. There might be a caller, but there was no response to our call.
The humans were thinking of landing.
“The unknown risks are too great. Their intentions are unclear. If it’s a landing survey, we androids will go. The loss of individuals is not a serious problem.”
PQ-10 suggested.
Like the ship’s AI, androids are given a voice in problem solving because they are able to analyze problems calmly and accurately. Humans have a tendency to act impulsively.
After some discussion, it was decided to land with four androids.
PQ-10 included herself among the four. It was unusual for a chief android to be assigned to a risky landing mission, but since the chief had the authority to appoint him, he could choose to include herself.
“Maybe it was just my curiosity,” she said.
The PQ-10’s scientific curiosity was probably fascinated by black hole.
The advantage of landing on a planet with only androids is that there is no need for life support. There is no need to pressurize the landing craft, and no need for space suits to land. Even toxic atmospheres are not a problem for the androids. The risk of sending a human is that life support becomes a liability.
The landing craft with the PQ-10 on board entered the atmosphere of Diabolos.
At an altitude of less than 100 km, the surroundings changed drastically.
Instead of a desolate planet, it looked like Earth, with oceans, green land, and blue skies.
“What’s going on? Are the instruments working?” PQ-10 said.
“No problem. The surface temperature is high, about 20 degrees Celsius. Cause unknown,” RK-08 reported.
“We’ve lost the communication link with the mothership,” NYT-03 said.
“We’re receiving a transmission from the ground,” ESW-01 said.
“Open a channel,” said PQ-10.
“Welcome to my planet. We welcome you all.
They spoke to me in our language. But the lander had been stripped of its freedom and was being controlled by an unknown entity.
“Welcome? How is this a welcome?”
This was a trap, the worst that could be expected, and PQ-10 feared it.
“It was a good thing I came. Everyone, arm yourselves.”
PQ-10 quotes a common human phrase.
“Now, let’s go to the party.”
