わたしはもうすぐサナギになる。
適齢期になり、生まれ変わりの準備をしないといけない。
巣穴に入る前に、男と交わって身ごもる。
そしてサナギとなり、５年の月日をかけてドラゴンに変態するのだ。
竜族は卵から人間の姿で生まれる。
生まれてくる子は、10人に１人が女だ。
ひとり立ちする15歳までは竜族の里で過ごす。その後は里を出て職業を選択し、各地を旅しながら学びと経験を積んでいく。
わたしは戦士の道を選び、傭兵として戦場を渡り歩いた。戦士は竜族が好む職業なのだ。幼少の頃より、武術は叩きこまれてきた。また、戦力としても各国から重宝されていた。
ときには同族ながら敵軍となることもあるが、弱肉強食で生きる我々の世界ではよくあることだ。
里を出て８年。
わたしは「銀髪のアイラビッシュ」と呼ばれ、恐れられるようになっていた。アイラビッシュとはゼスリア語で「竜族の娘」を意味し、わたしの個人名ではない。わたしの後ろには、「敵軍の死体が十里に渡って足跡のように連なる」などと噂されていた。それは誇張だが、まんざら嘘でもない。
わたしは人間たちの中に馴染み、自分が竜族であることを忘れてしまうほどだった。
しかし、体の変化は訪れることを忘れなかった。
それは南方戦線から帰還した頃だった。
体の中から熱く燃えるような衝動が湧き上がってきた。それがなんなのか、すぐにわかった。母からくどいくらい教えられていたことだ。
発情期。
竜族の女にとって、もっとも重要な時期が訪れたのだ。
人間たちと違って、竜族の発情期は一生に一度しかない。子孫を残す機会は一度しかないのだ。
発情期はサナギになる適齢期であることを意味し、里に戻らなければならない。
わたしは卵の種となる男を物色した。
子種は竜族である必要はなく、人間の男でもいい。竜族の血の半分は人間族なのだ。子種が多ければたくさんの卵を産めるから、多くの男と交わった。
里帰りの準備が整った頃、ドラゴンの母が迎えに来た。
わたしは母の背に乗り、北の竜族の里へと向かった。８年ぶりの里帰りだった。
竜族でドラゴンに変態するのは女だけだ。竜族の男は人間の姿のまま一生を終える。男たちの役目は、里を守り、サナギ化した女たちの世話をすることだ。
サナギになるのは、ドラゴンに生まれ変わるため。
そして、サナギになる前に体内の取り込んだ子種で、10個から20個の卵を産む。
サナギから孵れば、わたしはドラゴンになっている。そして卵を産む。母がそうであったように。
ドラゴンになれば、大空を飛べるようになる。
それが待ち遠しい。
