いい仕事があると、タウ・セチまでひとっ飛びしたのはいいが、ポンコツ宇宙船がバグってしまって、ワープできなくなっちまった。
帰りはどうすんだよ？
踏んだり蹴ったりとはこのことだ。
せっかくの稼ぎが、ワープエンジンの修理代に消えちまった。
半径500光年以内なら、わりと自由に航行できるようになった昨今。便利になったのは事実だが、コストもバカにならない。ワープエンジンの燃料になる反物質ユニットはいくらだと思う？

火星の郊外に一軒家が建てられる金額だ。
儲けを出すには、それ以上の稼ぎが必要だってこと。
タウ・セチの第４惑星「エデン」は、地球によく似ている。
宇宙植民時代の初期に入植が始まったから、当時の人々の理想から「エデン」と名付けられた。
大昔に、タウ・セチにいるかもしれない異星人に向けて、電波を飛ばしたそうだ。そういうアホな時代もあったのだ。恒星間宇宙に進出する高度な文明が、電波なんていうローテクを使うかよ。
残念ながら、タウ・セチに異星人はいなかった。
厳密にいうと、「いなくなった」だ。
かつての文明を物語る、遺跡は残っていた。しかし、彼らは何らかの理由で、この惑星を捨ててどこかに行ってしまった。
その惑星に、地球人が住み始めて３世紀が経つ。
楽園かどうかは、人それぞれだろうが、悪くない惑星だ。
ここにやってくる者の主な目的は２つ。
ひとつは観光、もうひとつは異星人の遺物探しだ。
オレは後者だ。
でもまぁ、太陽系から出ていく術がなかった３世紀前に比べれば、いい時代になったとは思うよ。
かつて、太陽系外に初めて出ていった探査機のボイジャーは、いまじゃ歴史的遺物としてアルファケンタウリ博物館で観光名所になっている。異星人へのメッセージを、未来人が受け取ることになるとは、予想していなかったことだろう。

I flew to “Tau Ceti” for a good job, but my beater spaceship had a bug, and I couldn’t warp out.
What are we going to do to get home?

Nowadays, we can travel within a radius of 500 light years rather freely. It is true that it has become more convenient, but the cost is not insignificant. How much do you think the antimatter units that fuel the warp engines cost?

Eden, the fourth planet of Tau Ceti, is very similar to Earth.
It was settled in the early days of space colonization, so it was named Eden after the ideals of the people of that time.
A long time ago, they sent out radio signals to aliens who might be on Tau Ceti. There was a time when they were that stupid. What kind of advanced civilization would use such a low-tech technology as radio waves to enter interstellar space?
Unfortunately, there were no aliens on Tau Ceti.
Strictly speaking, they were gone.
The remains of a former civilization still remained. However, for some reason, they had abandoned the planet and gone elsewhere.
It’s been three centuries since the people of Earth began to live on that planet.
Whether it’s paradise or not is up to each individual, but it’s not a bad planet.
There are two main purposes for those who come here.
One is for sightseeing, and the other is to search for alien relics.
I’m the latter.
But I suppose it’s a better time than three centuries ago, when there was no way to get out of the solar system.
Voyager, the first spacecraft to leave the solar system, is now a historical relic and a tourist attraction at the Alpha Centauri Museum. I guess they didn’t expect that people in the future would receive messages to aliens.
