「日出ずる国より、碧き戦士が魔を討ちに来たる」
語り継がれた伝説が、新たな歴史のページを綴り始める。
戦士のカイトは、西の山脈の魔族を殲滅し、アリスィア王国の英雄となった。
異世界に召喚されるという、ファンタジーもののベタな展開で、カイトはこの世界に来た。
「なにかの冗談か流行のＶＲゲームだと思ったよ」彼はいった。
「あるいは、オレは死んで、電脳墓地に入れられたとも思った。だって、現実にはありえないだろう、こういう展開は」
ゲーム世界かサイバー・セメタリーかはともかく、元の世界に戻れないらしいことはわかった。ならば、ここで生きていくしかない。
彼を召喚したエルフの女魔法使いのアステールがいった。
「アリスィア王国は魔族の脅威にさらされています。どうか、魔族を討ち滅ぼしてください」
「ちょっと待ってくれ。なんだ、その使い古された設定は？ オレはただの高校生だぞ。オレに特別な才能もスキルもないよ」彼はいった。
「そんなことはありません。召喚に応えてくれる方は、特別な方なのです。“カタスタシ”と唱えてみてください」
彼は訝しげな表情を浮かべた。
「カタスタシ」彼はいった。
すると、眼前に読めない言語が羅列された。
「ホロディスプレイなのか？」
「それはあなた様の属性と能力を示しています」彼女はいった。
「読めないんだが？」
「手で触れてみてください。読めるようになります」
彼はホロを指先で触れると、文字が日本語に変換された。
そこで彼は気がついた。
「君は日本語を話していたよね？」彼は聞いた。
「いいえ。わたしはわたしの国の言葉を話しています。耳の精霊が話し言葉を伝えてくれるのです。文字については目の精霊が助けてくれます」
「ずいぶん、便利な世界だね」彼はいった。
カイトの属性は戦士で、能力値は「英雄」になっていた。表現が曖昧だが、ようするにいきなりレベル999になっていた。
彼は初陣から無敵の強さで戦った。ゲームであれば、最低のレベルからこつこつとレベル上げをしていくものだが、最初から最高レベルなのだ。
彼は魔族に対してなんの恨みもないが、雇い主であるエルフに依頼されたから戦った。ゲーム世界の設定としては、ゲームバランスが悪すぎだと思った。彼は無敵だが、魔族は兵力と物量で勝り、彼ひとりですべての敵を倒すことは困難だった。
戦いは断続的に続き、５年の月日が流れた。
カイトのように召喚された者は、ほかにはいなかった。
その理由についてアステールはいった。
「召喚魔法は成功率が極めて低いのです。カイト様をお呼びできたのは奇跡でした」
「オレみたいな奴は、ほかにはいないのか？」彼は聞いた。
「昔はいたと聞いていますが、最近ではいないと思います」
「帰る方法はないんだな？」
「申し訳ありません。召喚魔法の逆はできないのです。向こうの世界から、召喚魔法を使ってもらうしかありません」
「それは無理だな。オレの世界に魔法はない」
カイトはこの世界について考えてみる。
これは一種のパラレルワールドなんだろう。エルフや魔族などのファンタジー世界の要素はあるが、植物や動物は元の世界と大差ない。春になればタンポポが咲くし、チュンチュン鳴いているのはスズメだ。猫はニャーと鳴くし、釣りでは知っている魚が釣れる。
世界のベースは同じなのだ。少しずつ違いがあり、たくさんの「if」が積み重なって、この世界ができているように思える。
オレの世界に魔法は存在しないが、こっちの世界では魔法は日常に溶けこんでいる。この世界が成立するには、いったいどれほどの「if」が背景になるだろうか？
カイトはこの世界が気に入っていた。
元の世界では冴えない高校生だったが、ここでは英雄であり、地位も財産も領地も手に入った。
中世の世界観に近いため、奴隷制も存在していた。献上品として女性を差し出す者もいた。彼は受け取りはしたが彼女たちを奴隷としては扱わなかった。使用人として雇い、賃金を払った。面白い世界ではあるが、女性の扱いについては迎合できなかったのだ。
西の魔族を倒したことで、アリスィア王国には束の間の平和が訪れていた。魔族は東と南の大陸にもいるので、いずれ攻めてくるだろう。魔族は戦いが生きがいなのだという。
カイトは戦いがないと暇だった。そこで彼は旅に出ることにした。地方では魔獣がときどき出て、人間の村を襲うことがあるらしい。魔獣狩りも悪くない。
領民を守るのは領主の務めでもある。
思い返してみれば、戦いのために遠征することはあっても、この国で旅行を楽しんだことはなかった。
護衛のために同行したいという家臣たちの反対を押し切って、カイトはひとりで旅立った。
彼はひとりになりたかったのだ。自分を見つめ直すために。

“Or maybe I thought I was dead and put into the Cyber Cemetery. I mean, this can’t happen in real life, can it?”
Regardless of whether it was the game world or the cyber cemetery, I knew that I couldn’t go back to the original world. Then, I’ll just have to live here.
Aster, the female elf wizard who summoned him, said.
“The Kingdom of Alysia is threatened by the evil race. Please help us defeat the evildoers.”
“Wait a minute. What’s with the overused setting? I’m just a high school student. I don’t have any special talents or skills,” he said.
“That’s not true. The one who responds to your summons is a special one. Try chanting the word ‘katastasi’.”
He gave me a quizzical look.
“Katastasi,” he said.
Then a list of unreadable languages appeared in front of him.
“Is it a holo-display?”
“It shows your attributes and abilities,” she said.
“I can’t read it.”
“Touch it with your hand and you will be able to read it.”
He touched the holo with his fingertips and the letters were translated into Japanese.
Then he realized.
“You speak Japanese, don’t you?” He asked.
“No. I speak my own language. I speak the language of my country, and the spirit of my ears tells me what to say. The spirit of the eye helps me with the written word.”
“It’s a very convenient world,” he said.
Kaito’s attribute was warrior, and his ability value was “Hero”. The expression is ambiguous, but in short, he had suddenly become level 999.
He fought with invincible strength from his first battle. In a game, you would have to start at the lowest level and work your way up, but he was at the highest level from the start.
He had nothing against the demon race, but he fought them because his employer, the elves, asked him to. As for the setting of the game world, I thought the game was too unbalanced. He was invincible, but the evil clans outnumbered him in strength and quantity, and it was difficult for him to defeat all of them by himself.
The battle continued intermittently, and five years passed.
No one else had been summoned like Kaito.
Aster explained the reason for this.

“Is there no one else like me?” He asked.

Kaito thinks about this world.
This is a kind of parallel world, I guess. There are elements of the fantasy world such as elves and evil races, but the plants and animals are much the same as in the original world. In spring, dandelions bloom, sparrows chirp. Cats meow, and fishing is a way to catch fish I know.
The base of the world is the same. But there are differences little by little, and a lot of “ifs” seem to have accumulated to make this world what it is.
In my world, magic doesn’t exist, but in this world, magic is a part of everyday life. I wonder how many “ifs” must be in the background for this world to exist.
Kaito liked this world.
In his original world, he was a dull high school student, but here, he was a hero, and he had status, wealth, and territory.
Slavery also existed, as it was similar to the medieval worldview. Some people offered women as gifts. He accepted them, but did not treat them as slaves. He hired them as servants and paid them wages. It was an interesting world, but he could not pander to the treatment of women.
With the defeat of the evil race in the west, there was a brief period of peace in the kingdom of Alysia. The evil clans are also in the eastern and southern continents, so they will eventually attack us. The evil clan lives for fighting.
Kaito was bored when there was no battle. So he decides to go on a trip. In the countryside, RabidFang sometimes appear and attack human villages, so hunting RabidFang is not a bad idea.
It is the duty of a lord to protect his people.
Looking back, I had never enjoyed traveling in this country, even though I had gone on expeditions to fight.
